Save Instagram Reels on iPhone and Android

Step by step: copy a Reel link, download it, and move the file into Photos or your Android gallery. Plus what to do when the video plays instead of saving.

Short answer: copy the Reel link from Instagram, paste it into SaveReel in Safari or Chrome (not inside the Instagram app), and tap Download. Android puts the file in Downloads. iPhone puts it in the Files app, and one more tap moves it to Photos.

Downloading a Reel takes a few seconds. Finding it afterwards is where most people get stuck, because phones file downloads away from the camera roll. This guide covers both halves on iPhone and Android, plus the fixes for the three problems we hear about most.

Before you start: use a real browser

If you tap a link inside Instagram, Facebook or another app, the page often opens in that app's built-in browser. Those built-in browsers are fine for reading but many of them quietly block downloads. Open SaveReel in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android instead. In an in-app browser, look for an option such as "Open in browser" in the menu at the top.

Step 1: Copy the Reel link

  1. Open the Reel in the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the paper plane icon on the right side of the video. On a regular feed post, it is under the photo.
  3. Tap Copy link. The link goes to your clipboard and starts with instagram.com/reel/ or instagram.com/p/.

Step 2: Download it with SaveReel

  1. Open the Instagram Reels Downloader in your browser.
  2. Tap the box and paste. On most phones the Paste button next to the box does it in one tap.
  3. Tap Download, wait a moment for the preview, then tap Download on the file you want.

What happens next depends on your phone and browser, so the next two sections take them one at a time.

On Android

In Chrome, the video is saved to the Download folder on your phone. A bar at the bottom of the screen confirms it, and you can tap Open straight from there.

To find it later:

  • Google Photos: go to Library and look under the device folders for Download.
  • Samsung Gallery: open Albums and choose Download.
  • Any phone: the Files app (or My Files on Samsung) has a Downloads section that lists everything Chrome has saved.

If the video starts playing instead of downloading, tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner of Chrome and tap the download arrow. The file lands in the same Download folder.

On iPhone

Safari on iPhone saves downloads to the Files app, not to Photos. While the download runs, a small arrow appears next to the address bar; tap it to watch the progress.

To move the Reel into your Photos library:

  1. Open the Files app and go to the Downloads folder.
  2. Tap the video to open it.
  3. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up) and choose Save Video.

If the video opens and plays in Safari instead of downloading, tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen and choose Save to Files. Then follow the three steps above.

Chrome on iPhone works in a similar way: it asks whether to download the file, then keeps it in a Chrome folder inside the Files app. The same Share and Save Video steps move it to Photos.

On a computer

Most desktop browsers save the file straight to your Downloads folder. If the video opens in a new tab and plays instead, right-click it and choose Save video as. That works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

What about Instagram's own Download option?

Instagram lets you download Reels from some public accounts directly. Tap the paper plane icon under a Reel and, if the creator allows it, you will see a Download option. It is quick and it is official, so it is worth knowing about. The trade-off is that the saved video carries an Instagram watermark with the creator's username, and creators can turn the option off. A file from SaveReel comes without any watermark added by us.

Fixes for the most common problems

The Download button does nothing

You are almost certainly inside an in-app browser. Open the page in Safari or Chrome and try again. A pop-up blocker can cause the same thing on desktop; allow pop-ups for savereel.online.

The video saved but has no sound

On iPhone, check that the silent switch or Action button isn't set to silent mode, since some players follow it. If the sound is still missing, Instagram may have muted the track for copyright reasons. In that case the muted version is the only one Instagram serves, so every download will be silent.

I can't find the file anywhere

Search your phone for ".mp4" in the Files app, or open your browser's Downloads list (in Chrome, it is in the three-dot menu). Reels are usually between a few megabytes and around 30 MB, so a download that seems to finish instantly on a slow connection may not have finished at all.

The Reel won't download at all

That is a different problem, usually a private or deleted post. Our guide to Instagram links that won't download explains how to tell which one you have and what to do about it.
